Alabama entered the Union in 1819 as the 22nd state. The capital is
Montgomery.
Alabama is bordered by Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee and
the largest cities are Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, Huntsville,
and Tuscaloosa.
The agriculture in the state is mainly poultry, eggs, cattle, peanuts
and cotton and the state’s production is paper, lumber, wood products
and apparel. An interesting point is that Alabama is the only state
with all major natural resources needed to make iron and steel. It is
also the largest supplier of cast-iron and steel pipe products.
The highest elevation in Alabama is Cheaha Mountain at 2407 feet while
the lowest spot is the Gulf of Mexico at Mobile Bay in the Gulf of Mexico.
One of the interesting point to visit in Alabama is the battleship
USS Alabama which is located in Mobile Bay at Battleship Memorial Park
which is one of the best of its kind. A tour of the ship gives visitors
a real feel of what it was like to live on a ship during war time. The
park itself takes visitors from World War II through Desert Storm.
If you are a golfer, Alabama is the place for you. This is likely the
only state that could almost be considered a state long golf course.
Through careful planning, golfers are offered courses not more than
2 ½ hours drive apart from north to south. There are 10 in all
and 432 holes. Each course takes into consideration the topography of
the area and the courses blend in with the nature of the area.
Alabama’s nickname is the Yellowhammer State. During the Civil
War, the southern troops were dressed in old ragged uniforms. A group
came into the area decked out in new uniforms that had bits of gold
or yellow cloth stitched to them. It reminded troops of the flicker
that is common to the area. From then on Alabama troops were proudly
referred to unofficially as the "Yellowhammers".
The state flower is the camellia, the salt water fish is the fighting
tarpon, the freshwater fish is the largemouth bass, the game bird is
the wild turkey, the state nut is the pecan, the tree is the longleaf
pine, the flower is the oak-leaf hydrangea, the insect is the monarch
butterfly and the gemstone is the star blue quartz.
