California was not established as a territory until 1847 when Mexico
surrendered it to John C. Fremont. The next year gold was discovered
at Sutter’s Mill bringing thousands of people into the area.
In 1850 California became the 31st state in the union.
By 1964 California had surpassed New York to become the state with the
largest population. The weather and the lovely coastline were two major
draws.
California is bordered by the Pacific Ocean in the west, Oregon on the
north, Nevada and Arizona on the east and the International border with
Mexico on the south.
The leading industries include agriculture, manufacturing, biotechnology,
aerospace and tourism. Petroleum, timber and natural gas are also major
industries in the state. Once the entertainment industry “discovered”
the wonderful weather and the photogenic sights, they made California
a center of
the entertainment industry.
Oddly, the highest and lowest spots in the continental Unites States
are both in California and are not far apart. Death Valley in the southeast
is 282 feet below sea level while Mt. Whitney towers over it at 14,491
feet. California boasts of one of the two active volcanoes in the Continental
U.S. Lassen Peak last erupted in 1917.
Some of the places that draw tourists to The Golden State of interest
include Yosemite National Park, Disneyland, Sea World, Hollywood, the
Golden Gate Bridge, Sequoia National Park and San Simeon State Park.
These are just a few of the places that draw tourists to the Golden
State every year. One of the goals of visitors to California is to see
some or all of the 21 missions built by Jesuit Priest Father Junipero
Serra who came to San Diego in 1769.
Some of California’s largest cities are Los Angeles, San Diego,
San Jose, San Francisco and Long Beach. From the redwoods in the north
to Death Valley on the east and the ocean on the west to San Diego in
the south, California is a wonderful place to visit.
The State animal is the Grizzly bear, the state bird
is the California Quail, the state Flower is the Poppy, and it's state
tree is the Redwood.
