    Nebraska

Nebraska became the 37th state to enter the union.  It was in 1867.  The capital is Lincoln.

The bordering states are Colorado, Missouri, Kansas, Wyoming, South Dakota and Iowa.
The largest cities in Nebraska are Omaha, Lincoln, Bellevue, Grand Island and Kearney.

Nebraska has been nicknamed the Cornhusker State.  It is also sometimes called the Beef State.

Nebraska’s agriculture includes cattle, corn, hogs, soybeans and wheat.  The state industries include food processing, machinery, electrical equipment and printing.

Former President Gerald Ford was born on Omaha

    The state symbols are:
                Flower is goldenrod
                Fish is channel catfish
                Tree is the cottonwood
                Bird is western meadowlark
                Rock is the prairie agate
                Mammal is the whitetail deer

Several interesting items on Nebraska’s boast list are:
In 1927 Edwin Perking invented Kool-Aid
The Lied Jungle is the world’s largest indoor rain forest.
Nebraska is the birthplace of the Ruben sandwich
                Spam is produced in Nebraska
Nebraska has more miles of rivers than any other state
The 911 system was developed in Nebraska
The University of Nebraska has produced more Academic All Americans than any other Division 1 school
Father Flanagan founded Boys Town in 1917.

Between Omaha and Lincoln is the Strategic Air Command museum.  It’s purpose id the educate, inspire and entertain. The 300,000 square foot main building was opened in 1998 and houses 2 aircraft display hangers, a children’s interactive gallery, a 200 seat  theater and much more including an area where visitors can watch war planes being restored.

To see how early settlers lived, visit the Sod House Museum in Gothenburg.  There’s a large sod cutting plow in front and the sparsely furnished house in an indication of the life of the pioneers.

In 1937, Nebraska became the only state in the Union to have a unicameral (one-house) legislature. Members are elected to it without party designation.
