The nickname, The Natural State” is evident in
the beautiful rolling hills and plentiful rivers and streams. The
highest point in the state is Magazine Mountains at 2753 feet and
the lowest point is the Ouachita River at 55 feet.
The area that includes Arkansas was bought by the United States in
1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Arkansas entered the union in
1836 as the 25th state. The capitol is Little Rock. It is bordered by
Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.
The largest cities in Arkansas are Little Rock, Fort Smith, North Little
Rock, Fayetteville and Jonesboro.
Agriculture in the state consists of poultry and eggs, sorghum, cattle,
cotton, rice hogs and milk. With a large food producing area, it is
not surprising that food processing is a major industry as is electric
equipment, fabricated and metal products, machinery and paper products.
One president has been from Arkansas. William Jefferson Clinton was
born in Hope, Arkansas and served as President from 1993-2001.
From Fort Smith, take the 70 mile rail trip aboard an authentic 19th
century passenger car into the Ozarks. Learn about the impact of cotton
in the area at the Plantation Agriculture Museum in Little Rock. Wander
through Prairie Grove State Park near Fayetteville which is the site
of one of the Civil War’s battles. It offers incite on the effects
of the war on the people of the Ozarks. These are just a few of the
places to go and things to see and do in this lovely state.
The state bird is the mockingbird, the flower is the apple blossom,
the tree is the pine and the insect is the honeybee.
It is interesting to note that the state gem is the diamond. Arkansas
is the only state in the union where diamonds have been discovered and
mined. The area is now a state park and, for a small fee, visitors can
dig for diamonds! In most cases the finds are very small but the average
number of finds is two a day. Recently a family was digging and the
father found a flawless 4.1 karat canary yellow diamond which proves
that the area is still sharing its wealth.
