History abounds throughout Massachusetts. From one end of the state
to the other, history has been written across the rolling back woods
to the seacoast. Its location made it one of the first stopping places
for people coming from Europe starting in 1620 when the Pilgrims landed
at Plymouth Rock.
Massachusetts became the 6th state and was one of the original 13 colonies.
Massachusetts is bordered by Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York,
Vermont and Rhode Island. The largest cities in Massachusetts are Boston,
Worcester, Springfield, Lowell and Cambridge.
Agriculture is a thriving industry and seafood, cranberries and vegetables
head the list. Other industries include electrical and scientific equipment,
machinery, printing and publishing.
Massachusetts is the home state of four of our Presidents: John Adams
1797-1801 (2nd), John Quincy Adams 1825-1829 (6th), John Fitzgerald
Kennedy 1961-1963 (35th) and George Herbert Walker Bush 1989-1993 (41st).
Massachusetts is first in many areas such as: 1634: Boston Common became
the first public park in America. 1891: The first basketball game was
played in Springfield where the basketball hall of fame is located.
Harvard was the first college established in North America.
Tourism is a huge industry in Massachusetts. Boston is a good place
to start looking back into history. 'Old Ironsides' is there as is the
North Church (remember? One if by land two if by sea (or is it the other
way around?) Anyway, we won the war!
One of the most innovative “tours” developed in any city
is the Freedom Trail. This is a series of historic sites that are connected
by red bricks or red brick line from the Boston Commons to the Bunker
Hill Monument, there are 14 stops along the way.
The state flower is the Mayflower, the state tree is the American Elm
and the state bird is the Black-Capped Chickadee.
