In 1889 Montana became the 41st state to join the union. Today the
capital is Helena. Montana is bordered by Idaho, North Dakota, South
Dakota, Wyoming and Canada.
Montana’s five largest cities are Billings, Missoula, Great Falls,
Butte and Bozeman.
Agriculture in Montana includes cattle, wheat, barley, hay and hogs.
Industry includes mining, lumber and wood products, food processing
and tourism.
Montana’s symbols include: the flower is the bitterroot, the tree
is the ponderosa pine, stones are the sapphire and agate, the bird is
the Western meadowlark and the animal is the grizzly bear.
The term Treasure State applies to more than gold, silver or gems that
have been found in the state. A drive through Glacier National Park
reveals treasures in scenery alone. It lies along Montana's northern
border and adjoins Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada, forming the
world's first International Peace Park. Glacier Park is the most visited
place in Montana.
Then there are the animals. White pelicans, white deer, antelope and
elk, moose, snow geese and grizzly bear are often seen.
The Going To The Sun Road in Glacier Park is considered one of the most
scenic drives in America. The Indians called the Rockies “The
Backbone of the World”. Montana is home to seven Indian reservations.
Near Billings, is the sight of Custer’s Last Stand at the Little
Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.
Great Falls is home to the original log cabin studio, home and museum
of the great western artist Charles Russell.
Do you like the quiet open spaces? The density of Montana is six people
per square mile.
Yellowstone National Park in southern Montana and northern Wyoming
was the first national park in the nation.
Montana's rivers and streams provide water for three oceans and three
of the North American continent's major river basins.
