In 1830 Maine became the 23rd state to enter the union.
Augusta became the capital in 1832. Prior to that Portland was the capital.
The state motto is Dirigo [I Direct].
Maine is the only one of the lower 48 states to be bordered by just
one state which is New Hampshire. The five largest cities are Portland,
Lewiston, Bangor, South Portland and Auburn.
The states agriculture includes seafood (approximately 40 millions
pounds (nearly 90 percent) of the nation's lobster supply is caught
off the coast of Maine) poultry and dairy products, blueberries (Maine
produces 99% of all the blueberries in the country making it the single
largest producer of blueberries in the United States) and apples.
Its industry includes lumber and wood products (almost 89% of Maine
is forested), food processing (Maine also leads the world in the production
of the familiar flat tins of sardines with 75 million shipped annually).
The state symbols are:
Tree-white pine, Flower-white pine cone and tassel, Bird-chickadee,
Fish-landlocked salmon, Mineral-tourmaline and the animal is the moose.
The White Mountain National Forest covers nearly 800,000 acres, the
forest covers a landscape ranging from hardwood forests to the largest
alpine area east of the Rocky Mountains.
The coastline boasts so many deep harbors it is thought all the navies
in the world could anchor in them.
