TUBAC
“Where art and history meet”
http://www.tubacaz.com/
It is believed that the Tubac area has been inhabited over 11,000
years. In modern times it was first a fort or presidio. Later
the town itself was established in 1882 and the school was built in
1885. Soon after, a group of scouts were organized to fight the
Apache Indians. After Geronimo’s surrender in 1886, peace
came to the Tubac valley.
Tubac is about 40 miles south of Tucson off of Interstate 19.
The cooler weather and the high desert scenery probably influenced
artists to move into the area. Today Tubac enjoys the well earned
reputation of being a true artist’s community. Working
studios and galleries line the streets where once soldiers marched. With
nearly one-hundred businesses, visitors can come away with gifts they
will be proud to give or items that will grace their own homes.
The Tubac Center of the Arts is very active with workshops for young
and old alike as well as lectures, performing arts and cultural events. It
is open to the public from September 1 through May 7.
